It is a movie, talking about the different gangs and racial differences in Long Beach, California. Then, a new teacher comes in to a class and sees how the students hate each other, since they are from different groups or gangs (there are Latinos, African Americans, Asians). She learns what they have to face each day, starting from living in poor nighborhoods, to the different racial gangs, and how they are always in danger. They always have guns, or drugs… Their “goal” is to make it to eighteen alive! Not only that, but they don’t have a lot of support from their families most of the times, and sometimes they are hit by their mom and dad. When she sees this, she tries to teach them that they can make a difference in the world, and that their stories should be heard, just like Anne Frank’s story. She then tells them to write in a journal, and they are later published. That is a short summary about the movie, but you should see it so you can understand me better. Not only because of that, but because it is such a good movie!!! This movie really made me think of how lucky most of us are, how we can be reading this right now, having a computer or at least using one. Maybe a computer is normal for us, but at least for these kids, the ones in the movies, to get a computer they would have to steal it because they couldnt get one. How I can go to school and have wonderful friends that like me for who I am and not for my beliefs or my race. We should really make good use of what we have, and not being in danger all the time and having a gun point at us…

The Holocaust, and racial discrimination against African Americans- major movements in history.

The movie was a lot about racial discrimination, but these were the two main “movements” I could think about. I found a quote from the movie, which is when one student draw a picture of another African American student, and the teacher saw it and said this to the class:

“You know something? I saw a picture just like this once, in a museum. Only it wasn’t a black man, it was a jewish man. And instead of the big lips he had a really big nose, like a rat’s nose. But he wasn’t just one particular jewish man. This was a drawing of all jews. And these drawings were put in the newspapers by the most famous gang in history. You think you know all about gangs? You’re amateurs. This gang will put you all to shame. And they started out poor and angry and everybody looked down on them. Until one man decided to give them some pride, an identity… and somebody to blame. You take over neighborhoods? That’s nothing compared to them. They took over countries. You want to know how? They just wiped out everybody else. Yeah, they wiped out everybody they didn’t like and everybody they blamed for their life being hard. And one of the ways they did it was by doing this: see, they print pictures like this in the newspapers, jewish people with big, long noses… blacks with big, fat lips. They’d also published scientific evidence that proved that jews and blacks were the lowest form of human species. Jews and blacks were more like animals. And because they were just like animals it didn’t matter if they lived or died. In fact, life would be a whole lot better if they were all dead. That’s how a holocaust happens. And that’s what you all think of each other.”

I’m going to take this opportunity to talk about how humans treat other humans. In World War II, as most of us know, Jews were treated like animals. That is one of the worst things that we, humans have created because of war. There was also racial discrimination against African Americans, early when the United States colonies started. They were used as slaves! That is horrible. It is incredible how humans can treat others like that, we should all help each other, because we are all the same. With these movements, what humans created was conflicts between themselves, instead of uniting and fighting our problems together. It is a shame that people can have such ideas, and how cruel they can be.

I can’t believe it…
